Abstract

This essay considers issues around the maternal in the work of German artist Annegret Soltau and Dutch artist Chrystl Rijkeboer. Soltau explores physical interventions into the female body, anxieties arising from loss of identity post partum, and metamorphosis through time, primarily through the medium of photographic collage. Rijkeboer uses hair as a material to express her concerns with ethical issues around motherhood.
